Copy and Paste between your device to a VM running in Hyper-V

Copy-and-Paste-Between-HyperV-VMs-and-host

Copy and paste between your Windows or MacOS and Hyper-V Server or VMs running do not work correctly. In order to be able to use the copy and paste feature between your device and Hyper-V, this needs to be configured in advance. Therefore, we will discuss how to perform Copy and Paste between your device to a VM running in Hyper-V. The easiest option to copy between a Personal Computer (Laptop) and a Hyper-V VM is to utilize the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to copy files. This, initiate a connection to the VM via RDP and then you should be able to copy files between your Computer and the VM.

If this is not an option for you and you want to be able to perform copy and paste between your physical hosts and VMs seamlessly, then follow the steps discussed below.

Method 1: Enable Enhanced Session Mode on Hyper-V

You have to check if the Enhanced Session Mode is enabled. If this is not enabled, please follow the steps below to ensure the Enhanced Session Mode is enabled.

Open the Hyper-V Manager console and right-click on the host name and select Hyper-V Settings. You could also select Hyper-V settings from the Action pane as you wish.

Click on the “Enhanced Session Mode Policy” from the Server inventory. Ensure the button close to “Allow enhanced session mode” is checked as shown below.

Also, in the Server inventory, ensure the “Use Enhanced Session Mode” button is checked. Click on OK when done.

Next, Turn off the VM

Connect to the VM again and this will Turn it back on.

A “VMConnect configuration window” pop up will appear on the desktop. Click on Show Option on the display configuration.

Navigate to the Local Resources and under the local devices and resources, ensure the Clipboard button is checked.

When this is done, you can copy basically anything from the physical device such as your laptop to the VM running on Hyper-V.

In the example below, I am copying an ISO image since I wish to install the VeeamONE monitor on this VM.

Method 2: Copying Images to VMS using the iSCSI Controller

In Hyper-V Manager, select the virtual machine where you want to add the storage. Right-click and choose “Settings”.

Under the iSCSI Controller, click on the DVD Drive and browse to the image you wish to attach and browse to the image. This image could be on a USB provided it is attached to the Server where the Hyper-V is running. This is why, many of you will not find this option optimal.

You will be able to select the image as shown below.

Now that the VeeamONE ISO image is available to us, we cam right click and mount or copy it. You can learn how to perform a VeeamONE upgrade.
